Cliff Re-Renders

Did 2 Different Renders with 2 different materials and editing. In my Opinion the second render looks better.

150 Words Design Inspiration & 250 Words Case Study + Ideas

Design Inspiration taken from the Butterfly House:

The Butterfly House is a residential building with multiple levels which its axis and positioning is primarily based on the views. I have decided to spread out the building out instead of having the each level stacked on top of each other. Hence I need to relocate the building to a different location, as its existing location is quite restricted. I was thinking to locate it to somewhere on a cliff with hills and rocks etc and embed the building into the natural landscape. Each section of the building will not be just on a straight path but rather positioned to blend into the landscape as well as being positioned to have the axis of the building facing the main views. I also need to keep in mind to keep the transparency of the building controlled and the positioning of the transparent elements need to be carefully placed.

Case Study of the Lippmann House:

The Lippmann House is located in Watsons Bay and was designed by Ed Lippmann in 2000. It is a form of recycled architecture as the building was previously a weatherboard cottage and has been transformed into a modern twenty first century house. The house replaced a semi-detached weatherboard cottage, which while discrete from the façade, has a completely different feel in the interior. The interior has been completely renovated and redesigned. The building is only 160sqm in area however there is a sense of spaciousness within the building, this is created by the fusion of internal spaces with one another and with the exterior. The external spaces are designed as extensions of the interior helping create a sense of seamless flow from the interior to the exterior of the building. In the lower level a sense of spaciousness is created by having loosely defined spaces. The lower level connects to the upper level by a spiral staircase. The use of a spiral staircase instead of a normal staircase against the wall helps create the sense of spaciousness as it has a transparent element to it thus not creating a fully defined space. The upper level is where the bedrooms are located. The hierarchy of spaces is also carefully designed with the master bedroom at the front of the house overlooking the family room. In so doing the house achieves a clear separation between children’s and adult’s domain. The house also has 14 operable skylights which provide air and light to the bedroom as well as the living areas.

BuildAR Box Demonstration:

I designed my box as two separate boxes to form one cube. The reason for this design relates back to my designer and in particular the buildings I drew inspiration from. The ideas of levels, raw materials and prisms was what really what inspired me to design my box the way I did. I left white spaces around my marker so BuildAR would recognise them more easily. I used cardboard to design my box and the reason I did not sand down my edges was because I wanted to reflect Herzog & DeMeuron idea of using "raw materials" and not trying to cover up these materials but rather show them as they are. In BuildAR I also carefully positioned the AR model so that when I placed two of the markers next to each other it showed a combination of (in my circumstance) the building in its environment instead of having one marker dedicated to it.

Week 4 Studio Task + Week 5 Independent Study

Week 4 Studio Task:

Reflection:

My project has been heavily influenced by the works of Herzog & DeMeuron. In particularly the building the designed located at 1111Lincoln Road. I have looked into what they have tried to achieve in the design of the building and I tried to design something reflective of their mindset in the design of this building. Herzog & DeMeuron looked to reinterpret the essence of “Tropical Modernism”, reflective of the modern movement in Brazil. The colour scheme I used is very nature like and reflective of the “Brazilian colours”.  Herzog & DeMeuron focused on raw structures providing shading, while enclosing sub-elements. The building is mainly made up of concrete and glass. Herzog & DeMeuron make little attempts to cover these raw elements up, but rather accentuate the beauty of them. I tried to reflect this by using oddly shaped slabs as the flooring and oddly shaped columns as a vertical. The columns and flooring are revealed, so the raw structure can be seen. The columns cast different shadows on each level and column giving more character to the facade, but also character inside the building.  I tried to enclosed sub-elements within my building using vertical prisms connecting to the columns to create a space/room. A lot of the character of the building is created in relation with the environment. The use of palm trees help create the sense of “Tropical Modernism” and in this sense the environment is very important. The building is located near Miami beach, and the idea of “Tropical Modernism” entwines very well with the context.

Grid Ideas:

Week 5 Independent Study:
Poster from chosen designer:
Uses a grid layout. The grid layout is easily noticeably with the white spaces breaking down the image into grids. However the grids are not all equal in dimensions to each other, which is quite interesting. Despite the fact uneven grids were used, the image does have a good sense of balance, scale, and proportion. The areas with written text appear to have some opacity change as well as some sort of filter, like sepia. The font they have used is appealing and it appears they have used different cases (ie lower and upper case). The size of the font also varies and this is done in a heirachy. He does not leave much white space, or space at all. The images are placed right at the edge of the spread. The only real space that has been left is the tiny white spaces and the spaces above and below the written text. It also uses a portrait layout, meaning that the spread is looked at from top to bottom.

Grid Design (using 1111 Lincoln Road as an example) by me.
