Reflection:

My project has been heavily influenced by the works of Herzog & DeMeuron. In particularly the building the designed located at 1111Lincoln Road. I have looked into what they have tried to achieve in the design of the building and I tried to design something reflective of their mindset in the design of this building. Herzog & DeMeuron looked to reinterpret the essence of “Tropical Modernism”, reflective of the modern movement in Brazil. The colour scheme I used is very nature like and reflective of the “Brazilian colours”. Herzog & DeMeuron focused on raw structures providing shading, while enclosing sub-elements. The building is mainly made up of concrete and glass. Herzog & DeMeuron make little attempts to cover these raw elements up, but rather accentuate the beauty of them. I tried to reflect this by using oddly shaped slabs as the flooring and oddly shaped columns as a vertical. The columns and flooring are revealed, so the raw structure can be seen. The columns cast different shadows on each level and column giving more character to the facade, but also character inside the building. I tried to enclosed sub-elements within my building using vertical prisms connecting to the columns to create a space/room. A lot of the character of the building is created in relation with the environment. The use of palm trees help create the sense of “Tropical Modernism” and in this sense the environment is very important. The building is located near Miami beach, and the idea of “Tropical Modernism” entwines very well with the context.

Uses a grid layout. The grid layout is easily noticeably with the white spaces breaking down the image into grids. However the grids are not all equal in dimensions to each other, which is quite interesting. Despite the fact uneven grids were used, the image does have a good sense of balance, scale, and proportion. The areas with written text appear to have some opacity change as well as some sort of filter, like sepia. The font they have used is appealing and it appears they have used different cases (ie lower and upper case). The size of the font also varies and this is done in a heirachy. He does not leave much white space, or space at all. The images are placed right at the edge of the spread. The only real space that has been left is the tiny white spaces and the spaces above and below the written text. It also uses a portrait layout, meaning that the spread is looked at from top to bottom.
